Character
Name: Lee Everett
Series: The Walking Dead (game)
Timeline: Post-canon
Canon Resource Links: TWD wiki

Major decisions (given the nature of the game):
-Saved Carley over Doug
-Didn’t kill Larry or either St. John brother
-Didn’t take supplies
-Didn’t leave Lilly behind
-Shot Duck
-Left Clementine at the mansion
-Saved Ben at Crawford
-Christa sawed off his arm after he was bitten
-Shot by Clementine to keep him from turning

Personality:
Most of Lee’s character is determined by the player, due to the choice-based nature of the game’s dialogue options. He can either be as close to a wide-eyed idealist as the party has, or he can be ruthlessly pragmatic. However, through his actions toward Clementine – even if you play Lee as a broken pedestal for the poor girl – you can see that there is a core, central character there who is a good man. Good examples lie in the decisions that aren’t left up to the player – in episode one, even though he’s injured and doesn’t know what’s going on, even though there are dead people rising from the grave, Lee still knows that he can’t just leave a little girl in her treehouse to fend for herself. The player isn’t even given a “but thou must”-type choice to bring Clementine along with you, Lee just knows what he has to do, and that’s bring Clementine with him.

Likewise, in the end of episode 4 when Clementine goes missing, the player isn’t given a choice whether or not to leave her behind. No matter how mean or cruel you were to Clementine over the course of the game, Lee will always go after her when she’s kidnapped, again without even giving the player a choice to try and say no.

While Clementine gets in harm’s way quite a few times over the course of the series, it’s important to note that if she dies, it’s treated as a game over. In certain scenarios, if Clementine is killed then Lee just stands there in shock and lets himself be killed by walkers immediately – again, no matter how cruel or mean the player is or intends to be toward Clementine, she is his reason for living, as evidenced by how if she dies, the game treats it the same as if he died, whether or not he dies onscreen.

Another part of Lee’s history that’s predetermined, and that speaks to his character, is that in the beginning of the game, he’s on his way to prison to serve a life sentence for murder. He killed his wife’s lover, a state senator, in a jealous rage. One of the first hard decisions that the player has to make is whether or not to be honest with the rest of the group about this – and the game makes you start with Clementine.

As for the decisions that are made over the course of the game (laid out above), they all point toward a kind, caring Lee. He’s merciful – he spares Kenny from having to murder his own son, and he tries to give Lilly a second chance even after she shot Carley in the head out of spite. He doesn’t kill Larry despite Larry’s racist dickbag behaviour, and he saves Ben in Crawford after Ben has basically done nothing but be more than useless throughout the entire game. He also cares deeply for Clementine, and wants to protect her at all costs, leaving her behind in the mansion in Savannah instead of letting her come to Crawford because he doesn’t know what to expect there.

He spares both St. John brothers, which is a cruel mercy since Danny’s leg is stuck in a bear trap and Andy has lost the will to live, leaving them defenseless as the walkers overrun the farm.

He’s idealistically pragmatic – he didn’t take the supplies, but nor did he put up much of a fight against the others taking the supplies. He stood with Clementine to stand with Clementine, not because he didn’t understand why they needed the supplies. Likewise, he was idealistic in thinking that removing the source of the bite would keep him from turning, but his cavalier “fuck it, cut it off” attitude is likewise pragmatic for the situation. His pragmatism really shines through in the rest of the rescue sequence as well, since he does some crazy shit (like climbing to the bell tower) with little more justification than “because it needs to be done and you guys have to stay alive in order to take care of Clementine”. He has less to lose than anyone else in the group and he knows it, putting himself in danger “because the one-armed guy says so”.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Determined – if Lee Everett has a goal, you can be damn sure he’s going to reach it. For example, when Clementine is kidnapped, he stops at nothing – even though he’s more than half dead by the time he reaches her – to rescue his sweet pea.
- Temper – While he’s overall a pretty nice and fair guy, when Lee gets angry you know it. For example, when Andy St. John grabs Clementine’s hair, all of his reactions involve lunging for him and some form of “LET HER GO!”/”YOU MOTHERFUCKER”/”I’LL FUCKING KILL YOU”. And considering he has actually killed someone, he’ll do it, too (also evidenced by the savage beating he delivers to Andy St. John afterward).
+ Smart – Lee was a college history professor before he was understandably fired for murdering a senator, so he’s a pretty well-educated guy. In addition, even Kenny admits that Lee is the group’s problem solver, as part of the reason why he’s so shocked and horrified that Lee has been bitten (and therefore handed a death sentence).
- Idealistic – While not necessarily a bad trait, there are times when Lee tends to give people the benefit of the doubt when he shouldn’t, also believing that all survivors deserve an equal chance, and that therefore they need to help as many as possible. This is evidenced by the way that he’s the one who picks up “strays” like Ben, Omid and Christa, and even Clementine. He wants the group to work so that they can all have the best possible chance of survival.
+ Loyal – While he prefers to stay aloof of disputes among his group, it’s only because he’s loyal to the survival of the group. For example, no matter whose side you were on in Episode 2 when Larry died, Lee will always help Lilly investigate the missing medical supplies. Another example is his unwavering loyalty to Clementine (only partly determinant on the player’s choices), including backing up her decisions like whether or not to take the supplies, or leave Ben behind.

First Person Sample:
[The man whose face appears on the screen looks like he isn’t used to having access to running water. He runs his hand over his bearded chin as if he’s longing for a razor to tidy up now that he’s gotten a much-needed shower.

On the other hand, there’s something cold and flinty in his eyes that makes him seem jaded and suspicious of the world around him. This isn’t a man to be trifled with.]

Alright, can anybody tell me what’s actually going on here? Where am I and why is there some lady calling herself my mom?

Also -- [The screen flips around to reveal a little tricolored bird with cream, blue, and red plumage sitting on the futon. It cocks its head at the screen.] -- can anyone tell me what the hell this is? It came out of one of those red and white balls, and it just keeps...watching me.

Third Person Sample:
“This sure as hell doesn’t look like my idea of heaven...” Lee mused, running a hand over his head. “Then again, any place without walkers isn’t exactly what I’d call hell, either...” He glanced down at his left arm, held his hand out in front of him, flexed his fingers. He pushed up his coat sleeve and glanced at the inside of his wrist, looking for a scar or something. But there was no trace that he’d ever been bitten. No trace that he’d had his arm sawed off to try to stave off an infection that had already pulled his number.

“Ruff?” The little bird who had been following him since he left that lady’s house hopped up to where he’d stopped. He could feel the warm, scaly toes as the talons of one of its feet dug into the toe of his shoe. He couldn’t really call it a ‘little’ bird, he guessed, since it was a little less than two feet tall. But it sure looked like a young one.

“What’d that lady say about you?” Lee asked, as if it could answer, looking down at the bird and crossing his arms. “You’re supposed to be my...partner?” It preened happily and looked up at him with expectant eyes. “I don’t know what you want from me, man. I’m not—I don’t—I’m not stayin’ long.” That was his goal, anyway. Though he didn’t know where else he could go. If there was even anything left back ho—back where he’d come from. His heart tightened at the thought, and his jaw clenched a little. The bird cooed almost sympathetically, closing its eyes and pressing its face against Lee’s leg through his jeans.

“Yeah, well, ‘less you’ve got a way to find a little girl, there ain’t much you can do for me, little guy.” A longing that wasn’t quite homesickness but hurt just the same welled up in his chest. “Fuck...” Last thing he remembered was Clementine’s tear-streaked face, splattered with walker muck, as she held the gun in shaking hands aimed at Lee’s head. Everything he’d put that little girl through...

Lee slumped to the ground, burying his head in his hands. The bird flapped its downy wings and hopped closer, tilting its head curiously.

“She was all I had.” A heavy weight settled on the curve of Lee’s back, pressing his chest to his knees suddenly. Talons dug into his jacket. He felt the strange texture of feathers nuzzling against his head, catching almost like Velcro against his hair, and then jumped at a sharp nip on his ear from the raptor. “Ow! Jesus! Now wait just a minute--!” The stern look on the creature’s face made him draw up short. Reluctantly, Lee hung his head and let out a heavy sigh. “If this is some strange kind of afterlife, I’d better be glad she’s not here.” As he stood to his feet, the bird squawked and dug its talons into his shoulder, causing him to wince.

“Might as well get moving. I dunno if I like the sound of being near a lab.”
